Week 12- Diffusion Theory

Social media is taking over more and more as society and technology advances. Looking at social media through the Diffusion Theory lens allows us to have a different perspective on WHY it caught on and how. Some people were early adopters and were open to joining social media sites when they began. Some people, however, were not on board and avoid social media and all it has to offer.

There are many reasons why someone might enjoy and catch on to social media. If they like being able to communicate with others when they are not together, share ideas and likes, and see what other people are doing in their day-to-day life, someone would enjoy social media. The early adopters are ones who are morer well-versed in the 'do's' and 'dont's' of different socials. For example, an early adopter of Instagram would have a better understanding of the platform and what posts are most popular than someone who was a late adopter. It also is an easier option for those with social anxiety to hide behind a screen and still get to communicate.

A lot of people dislike social media because they do not understand how it works, or they do not like to share personal information. Some people prefer privacy over intimacy. A lot of people do not care what is going on with others, or if they do they prefer to have face-to-face interaction. Face-to-face interaction is a lot easier for some people, especially older people and requires less technology.

Personally, I am very active on social media. I think that there are pros and cons to this. I get to constatnly interact with my friends no matter where they are. I get to stay updated on current topics, trends, and events. I can also update friends and family on what is going on in my life. It provides plenty of entertainment. I think the most obvious negative impact social media has on me is that people often portray a perfect life. This is not the reality most of the time. When I go on social media, I see everyone looking and acting their best and it can make me feel bad about myself. I think that the good outweighs the bad, but an occasional social media hiatus is good for everyone.

Week 2- News Story- BLM Protests

When asked to write about a news story relevant to the First Amendment and a dispute, the first thing that comes to mind is the situation happening between people of color and the police. Many Black (and white) Americans are outraged at how the police and society treat Black people. There has been a build up of many cases where innocent Black people have had their lives taken by the police being overly violent and brutal when not necessary. The George Floyd case recently sparked an outrage from a group of people who have been oppressed for far too long. Protests have been occurring all over the U.S., and even in other countries. These protests are a perfect example of the First Amendment. Because of the First Amendment, people have the freedom to speak up about the Black Lives Matter movement, whether they are for or against it. Media has the ability to inform the public about what is going on and report their standings on the situation. The government cannot stop anyone from protest...

Week 4- Civil War Statues

The times of the Civil War may seem long gone, but they are in fact relevant and occuring today. During the recent protests, protestors have been tearing down and vandalising Confederate statues that were put up after the Civil War. The Black community is upset and outraged (for good reason) at the treatment they have been recieveing, especially from the police and government. Having statues of generals who fought for slavery is not a good image and is upsetting for most people. Most southern lawmakers have made it harder to get rid of these statues, so protestors have gone in a different direction in eliminating them. One of the six freedoms in the first amendment is the freedom to assemble/petition. This allows the protest against the government to occur. The amendment says that they must be peaceful, however the mistreatment of Black people for so long has caused many to protest aggressively. In an ideal world, peaceful protests would immediately lead to change. This is not the c...
